With no one else to check, you can easily forget to lock it before going to bed. Also close and lock windows, especially the kitchen windows after finishing cooking, and windows and doors of any other rooms that you do not use on a daily basis.

Curtains and Blinds: Close them when you are not in the room. Do not leave lights on in a room with curtains open, and let any wandering eyes to see your possessions. A lot of burglars are just opportunists and don’t give them temptations.

Even worse is letting someone know you are working late or out for the evening, or away on holiday. Try not to post photos of your expensive possessions either.

Neighbours: Get to know them. Not always easy, but definitely worth getting to know the right neighbours, who can look out for each other. Good neighbours should be able to keep an eye on your place when you are away.
